Wired by Nightshade Review

I don’t like Industrial Metal. I never really understood it. Oh, sure, I went through my Nine Inch Nails phase like everyone of my generation, but that all ended around Further Down The Spiral, and I never felt the need to delve any deeper into the genre.

I have friends who swear by it, and one friend in particular who could name you the most obscure shit from the likes of Finland, but on a personal level my interest in Industrial Metal kind of begins and ends with the early career of Trent Reznor.

So… yeah… perfect bloke for this job, right?

Well, kind of, as Wired by Nightshade isn’t really Industrial Metal. I mean, it is but it isn’t. I mean… *sigh*… let me explain.

Wired has all the bells and whistles that you would expect from an Industrial Metal album. It has the keyboards, the samples, the drum machine, the programming, all the stuff you would usually expect from a band from 2003, when this was first released, but it also has a few very interesting twists and turns that you wouldn’t expect.

Musically, there are a lot of very heavy riffs on offer. Chord progressions that you wouldn’t usually associate with Industrial Metal that are actually… well… quite metal. There are also enough widdly solos to satisfy the most ardent Yngwie Malmsteen fan, and though I normally have a low threshold for that sort of guitar playjng, it works incredibally well for Nightshade on thIs EP.

Elsewhere, the vocals of Dave G will get the usual comparison to Rammstein, but if you listen closely you’ll norice there is a lot of Black/Death Metal wrapped up in what he is doing, which gives this a much more Blackend Industrial feel than most other bands in the genre.

So, the billion dollar question is; Did Wired by Nightshade convert me to the Industrial Metal cause?

Truthfully, no.

As I said, this kind of music is not my thing. I don’t get it. But, having said all that, it left enough of an impression on me that I wouldn’t be averse to listening to Nightshade again if we ever crossed paths and if I was passing a club one evening and saw they were playing, then instead of walking on by I’m pretty sure I’d step inside and catch the show.

Head on over the the Nightshade Bandcamp and check out Wired for yourself.
