Hello friends! It’s Risa again, this time I’m here to talk about a new EP from Bird Violence- Echoes of Sublime Chaos. This EP has 3 tracks and is around 11 minutes long.
Now let’s dive in!
To be perfectly honest with you, before this morning when I listened to this for the first time, I had never heard the term “dungeon synth” before. I apparently need to educate myself on the subtle shifts and differences in the umbrella of the Synth genre.
The first track on this EP is From the Depths, Laments Rise to Precede the End. I genuinely really enjoyed this one. There is a soft almost crystalline sound throughout the track with a nice subtle overlay of rain sounds. There is also a distinct gong-like sound sprinkled into the song very nicely. It tickles my neurodivergent brain just right. This is exactly the kind of music I want on while I study or to relax before bed.
The second track is called Echoes of Sublime Chaos. It starts out really nice with a soft acoustic guitar sound underneath that crystalline noise from the first track. Then around one minute and fifteen seconds, the sound drastically changes when a breathy gregorian-like chant is introduced. It is a bit jarring at first, with an interesting sense of juxtaposition because the same crystallized guitar sound is happening underneath the vocalization. To be honest, I was a bit uncomfortable with this one I think because of how unexpected it was. When the song reaches three minutes and twenty seconds, the guitar and vocalization ends and we are left with the softness of the synthetic chime and gong sounds. Although I don’t think I liked this song very much, I will say it made me feel more than the others and that is what matters with art I think.
The third and final song we have here is called Crystal Sword Staff. This one starts off very similarly to the other two, but then brings in a steady bass drum that is felt deep in the chest. This track is equally as relaxing and pleasing to my brain as the first one. I will be adding both of them to a personal playlist ASAP.
