Review: Frost Requiem by Vinnfrost

Frost Requiem by Vinnfrost is just under 15 minutes of Finnish Melodic Death Metal that hits all the right spots.

Let’s be honest: in an age where bands feel obligated to stuff thirty minutes of pointless atmosphere and two useless interlude tracks onto an EP just to justify the packaging, there is a specific, glorious satisfaction in a band that clocks in under fifteen minutes and still manages to leave you battered and exhilarated. Vinnfrost has done exactly that. This is not some sprawling, self-indulgent epic; it’s a focused, clinical operation designed for one purpose: maximum cranial damage.

What immediately sets this Finnish outfit apart is their respect for the riff. This EP doesn’t go hard and fast unless it absolutely has to. Too many bands confuse volume and velocity with actual aggression, resulting in tedious, one-dimensional noise. Vinnfrost, however, understands the power of the groove. They build their momentum with a deliberate, crushing weight, knowing exactly when to pull back and allow the rhythm to lock into a head-crushing, contagious swagger. The result is a total headbanger of an EP. You can feel the songs working on a deep, physical level, demanding movement and demanding that you acknowledge the sheer power they contain.

The lack of pretense here is refreshing. The playing on Frost Requiem is not flashy unless the song demands a flash of fire. There are no needless, masturbatory solos tacked onto the end of a solid verse just to prove the guitarist took lessons. This outfit is all about the songs themselves, not about showing off. The riffs are sturdy, the rhythms are airtight, and every single instrument serves the greater purpose of delivering Melodic Death Metal that is heavy, precise, and utterly devoid of ego. It’s a testament to the fact that competence is always more effective than needless complexity. If you want to show off, go film a TikTok video; if you want to write a great song, stick to the Vinnfrost template.

The dynamic nature of the attack is further amplified by the vocals. The range here is deployed like a surgical scalpel. One minute, you are faced with a deep, authoritative growl that sounds like it’s emanating from the pit of the earth; the next, the voice snaps into a searing, high-pitched screech that adds a crucial layer of desperation and sonic height. This vocal versatility ensures that the band can switch between brute force and piercing melody without ever having to rely on tired clean singing tropes. The performance elevates the melodic aspects of the death metal without ever softening the core aggression.

In short, Frost Requiem is a lesson in efficient brutality. Vinnfrost has delivered an EP that is perfectly paced, technically astute without being smug, and loaded with the kind of focused, song-centric power that ensures its impact is far larger than its brief runtime suggests. Finnish Melodic Death Metal, delivered with zero compromises and absolute precision.

Frost Requiem by Vinnfrost will be available November 14th.
