Review: Dreaming The Otherwhere by Rogga Johansson

You know the name. Rogga Johansson — the man’s practically a one-man Swedish Death Metal industry at this point. Bands, projects, collaborations — if it growls, grinds, or reeks of decay, Rogga’s probably behind it somewhere. And with Dreaming The Otherwhere, his fifth solo outing (though he is joined by Kjetil Lynghaug — lead guitars, Johan Berglund — bass, and Jon Rudin — drums, for this venture), he’s not reinventing the wheel — he’s running you over with it.

This album is exactly what you’d expect from one of the genre’s most relentless workhorses: it’s heavier than a granite tomb, more aggressive than a ‘roided-up pit bull, and more apocalyptic than a meteor storm over Stockholm. From the first note, it’s all-out war — the kind of record that makes your neighbours call the police and your soul feel like it’s been fed into a woodchipper.

The production hits that perfect Swedish sweet spot — thick, filthy, and razor sharp. The riffs are pure chainsaw worship, slicing through everything in their path with that HM-2 soaked snarl that could level cities. Every track stomps forward with unrelenting precision, brutal yet utterly listenable, and Rogga’s growls are as cavernous and commanding as ever — like a goddamn necromancer bellowing orders to his undead legion.

There’s no pretension here, no “progressive elements,” no soft underbelly. Just pure, unadulterated Death Metal the way it was meant to be — guttural, grim, and gleefully destructive. Every riff is a punch to the throat, every solo a rusty blade twisted between your ribs. You can practically feel the years of blood and distortion dripping through every track.

And that’s the beauty of it. Dreaming The Otherwhere isn’t about innovation — it’s about domination. It’s about staying true to the sound that built a genre and making it hit harder than ever. Rogga Johansson has been doing this longer than some fans have been alive, and he still plays like the world’s ending tomorrow.

From the unstoppable opener of Dreaming The Otherside to the closing barrage of The Rotten Hordes, there isn’t a wasted second. It’s lean, mean, and radiates confidence — the sound of an artist who knows exactly what Death Metal should be, and how to make it bleed.

Dreaming The Otherside by Rogga Johansson is available now from Iron, Blood & Death Corp.

BLACK METAL ARCHIVES VERDICT: Dreaming The Otherwhere is a masterclass in controlled chaos — filthy, aggressive, and gloriously apocalyptic. Rogga Johansson continues to prove that Swedish Death Metal isn’t just alive… it’s ravenous.
