Ever since I reviewed The Sojouner by In Mourning a few months back, I have been chomping at the bit to get my lugholes around their latest – and seventh – offering, The Immortal.
Now, this is something I very rarely do as I always worry that if I get hyped for a record then it will usually fail to deliver. Usually because of the high expectations I have heaped upon it, which isn’t the bands fault, but when you are as desperate for a new release the way a fading reality TV star is for one more second of fame, then you can find yourself disappointed. Fortunately – unlike anything that reality TV has ever been attached too – The Immortal by In Mourning doesn’t disappoint in any way.

This record is a fucking masterpiece.
There isn’t one wasted second across the entire bleak and violent landscape that In Mouring paint, with music so heavy that it would break your back of it were dropped on you.
The Immortal is an album that you are part of, not because you want to be but because it demands it of you. It demands that you sit up and pay attention as the vocals switch from Hell to Heaven, seamlessly, fluidly. It demands that you bang your head like a demon on crack – hoping your headphones don’t fly off and shatter into a million pieces – as the guitars, bass, and drums engulf you like a funeral shroud made of molten lead. And it demands that you let it into your life and embrace it like a friend you haven’t seen for far too long.
It is almost godlike in the way it is structured. With unforgiving and punishing melodic Death Metal stretching out across the horizion as far as the eye can see, which is interwoven with moments of such soft and gentle that your breathe catches in your throat and tears well up in your eyes.
It is a contrast in styles that many bands in the genre attempt, but very few get right every single time, and none have managed to achieve to such utter fucking perfection.

This isn’t just an album, The Immortal is a statement that In Mourning are not just the greatest band doing this form of music around at the moment, but that they are the greatest band to ever do, ever, period, end of fucking discussion.
I am telling you know, folks, everyone else might just as well pack up and go home, because The Immortal isn’t just the greatest album around at the moment, it’s my album of the year and will remain so, for every following year, until In Mourning release their eighth record to take its place on the throne.
This isn’t just a record. This is the pinnacle of art.
