The Aquarius Shift by Kaptain Kollnot Review

The best way to describe The Aquarius Shift by Kaptain Kollnot is to state that it’s Operatic Thrash Blackend Symphonic Death Power Metal. Which sound like a mouthful because… well… it is, but it also encapsulates the fact that The Aquarius Shift by Kaptain Kollnot covers all those genres – and a few I’ve probably forgotten to mention – and delivers a four track, 25 minute long experience quite unlike anything I have heard in quite a while.

In fact, I’m pretty sure I’ve never heard anything quite like Kaptain Kollnot before, in my five decades on this planet, because the sound that Kaptain Kollnot delivers isn’t just huge, it’s fucking interplanetary sized.

The brainchild of Jeff Kollnot, Kaptain Kollnot is a cosmic experience that seems to be based in the next era of Mankind, but feels as if it atretches beyong this world, out into the cosmos.

That’s right folks, this album is so bloody good, it’s got me waxing lyrical like a first year philosophy student. It’s that good.

Musically it is a driving monster of a record. A gargantuan beast that thunders towards you at breakneck speed, and runs you down. Then it then turns around and does it again. And again. And again. For eternity.

It is utterly relentless, with blast beats galore, basslines that grip you by the throat and squeese until your face turns blue, and guitar work so outrageous that it should be required listening for all guitar players as an example of just what can be done with six strings when you put your mind to it. Even during the more quieter movements on The Aquarius Shift – such as the outro to The Nature of Evil – there is an understanding of what a song needs that most bands would give their right arms to possess.

All of this is topped off by the vocals of Stu Block, a man that owns one of the greatest and fullest rock/metal voices in the business today, and with talk of Kaptain Kollnot putting together a touring act doing the rounds, I hope that the Kaptain has the sense to keep Stu Block at the mic, as I’m not convinced anyone else could do these songs justice.

The Aquarius Shift is a brilliant piece of work. An EP that feels like a fully fledged album and one that you will leave on repeat for hours on end.

I have a system when it comes to the albums I review. A few I get sent are so bad that they go straight into the Recycle Bin, a lot of others I keep by uploading to the cloud so they are available when I get the urge to listen to them, while a very select few stay on my phone as I know I’m going to listen to them at least once a week

.The Aquarius Shift by Kaptain Kollnot is never leaving my phone.

The Aquarius Shift by Kaptain Kollnot is available now.
