The Sojouner by In Mourning Review

Well, here’s a sentence that I never thought I’d use to describe a song by a Melodic Death Metal band. The Sojouner by In Mourning is driven by a riff so funky that you won’t be able to refrain from cutting a rug, even – if like me – the best you can offer are Dad Moves that amount to nothing more than shaking your posterior like you’re having a seizure.

No. Seriously.

It is so damn groovy, in fact, that it wouldn’t have sounded out of place on a Funkadelic album, which is probably the highest praise I can offer The Sojouner and In Mourning, because as far as I’m concerned George Clinton is a musical God who can do no wrong. And on the strength of this single, In Mourning might be treading the same path.

The Sojouner doesn’t just funk-it-up-Fishbone, as it is also a rip roaring Metal masterpiece, that has more twists than a hurricane and probably lifts about 500 pounds. The Sojouner is as dark as night, but with moments of light that are uplifting and achingly beautiful – such as suring the bridge/chorus – with the duel vocal work of Björn Pettersson and Tobias Netzell supplying a stark contrast between each other that works perfectly.

Musically it is superb, vocally it is immense, and these combinations deliver a song that may only be an appetiser for the forthcoming album The Immortal, but it will leave you hungry for more.
