Ascended Deliverance by Tigguo Cobauc Review

If you’re someone whose been with us since the early days of less than a year ago, you’ll know I’m a huge fan of Tigguo Cobauc – even if their name still gives me a headache when I try to remember how to spell it without looking.

In fact, they were one of the first bands I covered when I started the Black Metal Archives, and I have been a staunch supporter of them whenever and wherever I can be, to anyone who will listen.

So, as you can imagine, when news reached me this morning that they had a new single out, I was already blasting it through my headphones before my eyes had read the final words informing me of such.

It was then I noticed something, something about it that seemed very familiar yet different, and I had to pause to check what it was. Then I noticed the title, Ascended Deliverance, and I realised that this new track is a reworking of the final track from their brilliant A Fountain Of Anguish Is Gone. But why?

Checking out the blurb that accompanied it, I saw that it featured:

“…Chelsea Marrow (Voraath, Visitant) and Craig Phillips (the new voice of Tigguo Cobauc).”

And that:

“For the collective, it marks a significant rebirth, a transformative chapter in their creative journey.”

Instinctively I went to A Fountain Of Anguish Is Gone and slapped on Deliverance, before playing Ascended Deliverance straight after, back to back, side by side, and every other way I could think of, and it didn’t take too long for it to click.

For those of you who don’t know – and if you don’t, you need to go and by A Fountain Of Anguish Is Gone to help cleanse you of your shame – Deliverance is a desolate piece of music. It feels as if the weight of the world sits on its shoulders and it is reaching out to you to pull it free of the malestrom it finds itself trapped in. It stands out among the madness of A Fountain Of Anguish Is Gone because it is so bleak and stripped bare, compared to the rest of the records seeming attempt to strangle you to death. It is an end. It is the end. And when you it finally fades into the ether, part of you fades with it.

Yet, Ascended Deliverance is the sound of a phoenix rising from the ashes. It is a hand being thrust from the rubble as the body connected to it crawls to the surface, refusing to die. It is not barren. It is not empty. It is filled with the sound of the human spirit, marching to the pounding rhythm that drives us all on, day by day. It is heavy footed, backed by a riff that slams down with enough force to split a mountain in two, while the vocals are no longer a plea for help, but a defiant roar in the face of adversity.

They may have the same name and skeleton under but these are two different completely different song, and in Ascended Deliverance, Tigguo Cobauc deliver a song that doesn’t just announce a new future for the band, but that it will be one they chase after to the ends pf the earth.
