Sandfinger aren’t Thrash Metal. Oh, they might be labelled as that in their Press Release, but the fact remains that Sandfinger and their new EP, Minus Illusion, just isn’t Thrash. What it is, however, is an International conglomerate of musicians who decided to get together and make a a record so fucking heavy that it would crush you like a piece of soggy toilet paper if it were to fall on you.

There is a lot to like about Minus Illusion, but the thing that stood out for me first and foremost, was just how loud and oppressive the sound was. It reminds me of Pantera’s The Great Southern Trendkill. Not in the execution of the music on offer, but in the production that fills your ears from the second track – after you get past Intro – and threatens to drown you in its tsunami of so fucking heavy they need to make a seperate unit of weight to describe it’s noise.
I vote for Metric Fuck Ton Of Metal.
And as for the International feel of Sandfinger, that isn’t just a buzz phrase, as the band is made up of musicians from Italy, Kazakhstan, Germany, Ukraine, and Japan, and it is this mixing pot of different cultures that makes Minus Illusion stand out.
Every country has its own definition of Metal, and each culture interprets it in its own way. Japanese Metal doesn’t sound like British Metal. British Metal doesn’t sound like German Metal. German Metal doesn’t sound like American Metal. And so forth and so on. It can even sound different within its own country. For example, Metallica and Anthrax never sounded the same, and they were seperated by 2,000 miles but are still in America, and even though this might sound like I’m waffling, I have a point.
Part of what makes Minus Illusion work so well is that every member brings something unique to their style of playing, influenced by where they grew up, and it is a brilliant concoction that you need to drink from.
Sandfinger are heavy as fuck. Minus Illusion is a great fucking record. And for a band that are supposed to be Thrash, they aren’t afraid to lay down a very infectious groove that you feel deep in the put of your stomach.
Minus Illusion by Sandfinger is available now.
