Towards Nothingness is the latest two-track EP from Malum, a Norwegian outfit formed in 2022. Released through Hellstain Productions on April 18th, Towards Nothingness follows their first album, In Nauseum, and expands upon their sound. Malum seeks to establish a mix of raw, atmospheric, and melodic elements into an apocalyptic sound space. Inspired by themes of existential pain and despair, the dismal influence is felt through each note and heart-wrenching wail.

Our first track, In Gloom I, thrusts us in the eye of the storm with harsh rhythms and abrasive guitar riffs. This falls into the mid-tempo category, neither airing too fast nor slow, which in turn allows one to appreciate the musicianship. Here, though, the mix leaves the kick drum in particular sounding a bit flat and out of place with the brightness of the other instruments. The layering does compensate by creating a nice depth and atmospheric pressure.
The second and final track, Towards Nothingness, is my favorite out of the two. The ferocity is palpable, as well as the overarching themes of misanthropy. It has a strong air of detestation, which matches the harder-driving riff work and overall higher energy. The brief spoken word section also adds to the mood rather than detracting from the energy.
Malum’s Towards Nothingness is available for purchase digitally and physically now on Bandcamp. Please, check them out and let us know what your opinions are on this latest addition to their catalog. Until next time, thanks for reading, and hail or something.
