Music Kills by Dying Awkward Angel is one of those songs that doesn’t fuck about.
From the outset it is obvious that Dying Awkward Angel intend to win you over to their cause by smashing your face to a bloody pulp, instead of trying to seduce you with soft passages hidden within the darkest Melodic Death Metal.
That’s not to say that Dying Awkward Angel don’t understand the need for melody in Melodic Death Metal, they do, it’s just that – at least on Music Kills – that they choose to focus on riffs heavy enough to break Atlas’ back, more than they do on the usual orchestral passages and choir ladden backing vocals that is the domain of most bands in the genre. Basically, this is Melodic Death Metal.you can bang your fucking head to without having to pause every so often to nod appreciatively at an incredibally complicated compostion that has suddenly appeared from left field without warning.
Not that I have anything against that sort of thing happening, but sometimes I just want to slam-dance, motherfuckers. And slam-dance you can.
Guitars that chug away like an out of control train, a rhythm section that synches in a beat that you will find yourself stomping around your living room to, vocals that are so gutteral they’re in the sewer with the rats, and enough up-tempo moments that you’ll put so many dents in your walls from bouncing off of them that your home will suffer a decent amount of structural damage, Music Kills has it all.
Dying Awkward Angel have laid down the marker in their next evolution as a band, and by the sound of Music Kills, it’s going to be a dark and twisted ride.
