Welcome back, friends. Risa here, and I’ve got another dungeon synth album for you today (big surprise). This time, we are going to talk about Hecate’s album Dance Beneath the Poison Moon. Released on March 8, 2025, this album is an eleven track compilation dedicated to the triple goddess Hecate herself.
The introduction track has a base sound that is reminiscent of a children’s music box. It is a little creepy but also a little nostalgic at the same time. There are some rain and thunder sounds as well as some almost monster noises, like a creature is coming to join you. This adds to the dark ambiance I think the artist was shooting for here.
The use of what sounds like a lyre in the next track, Water on my Left Hand Side, gives it a medieval feel. When paired with the demonic voices layered in, this song feels incredibly witchy. This would be a great track for use in some kind of moon ritual by the pagan community.
Track 3, Two Torches Light the Path, is soft and melodic. If you have ever gotten a professional massage, this song sounds like something you would have heard while being massaged. It is a beautiful ambient sound that is perfect for meditation of any kind.
I will be fully transparent with you all and let you know that I didn’t really care for the next song. Communion With the Mother of Witches begins very crystalline. At first, I assumed it would be another good meditative track. And then the whispers began. I have misophobia and the way the whispers in this song interact with the crystal sounds of the music did something unpleasant in my brain and made me uncomfortable. I think if those vocal sounds had been used over a different musical track, it wouldn’t have bothered me so much. But alas, this song just isn’t my personal cup of tea.
Honestly though, that is my only complaint. The other 10 songs are all very good.
The rest of the album follows the same mystical and enchanting dark ambiance that the first half followed. It’s a delightful album that fulfills all of your ritual and meditative needs. It is not the kind of music that is appropriate for all day everyday, but it fills a very specific niche and I think it does that incredibly well.
