According to their bio, Alzhagoth are;
“Dedicated to the pagan death metal cult of Alzhagoth, the band’s members abandoned their former lives and bands in 2019 to fully devote themselves to channeling the messages of the primordial being they follow. United by inspiration drawn from flesh and blood, they raise their goblets each night in honor of the god Alzhagoth.”
Now, I don’t know a lot about that – though raising a goblet or two is a speciality of mine – but what I do know is that the Italian Metal scene is kicking out the jams at the moment and as debut albums go, Ad Finem is a proper fucking banger.
The opening keyboard refrain on Sermons Of The Blind lulls you into a false sense of security, before the track slams you in the face with the force of 100 gatling guns, launching you into the next 38 minutes of pure, technical melodic Death Metal that overhelms your senses and oozes into your pores. But Ad Finem is more than just a breakneck jaunt through some of the most perfectly written songs you will hear this year, and Alzhagoth are more than just a melodic Death Metal band.
There is no doubting that their sound is designed to almost suffocate you with its epic scope, but if that’s all it did, it would grow really old, really quickly. This is where Alzhagoth truly come into their own.
Across the entire runtime of Ad Finem, Alzhagoth throw in different styles of music that are brilliant, heartbreaking, and jaw dropping in equal measures.
The guitar solo at the end of Herald Of Chaos reminds me – for some reason – of Gary Moore’s Parisienne Walkways, while the grandiose sweeping classical landscapes they weave into the likes of Ancient Blood that makes me think they will have to take a full orchestra out on tour with them when they hit the road.
There is a size to Ad Finem that you won’t hear in most other records in the genre, let alone debut efforts. It could fill a thousand Sydney Opera Houses and still have enough to plug the Hrand Canyon.
With Ad Finem, Alzhagoth have unleashed a piece of work so good, so damn impressive, that it’s almost impossible to see where they can go from here, but considering that Alzhagoth have only just burst onto the scene, I doubt very much that they’ll be leaving us anytime soon.
Ad Finem by Alzhagoth is available now via Inertial Music.
