When Humans Defy The Void by Vortex

According to Vortex themselves, the lead single, When Humans Defy The Void, from their forthcoming concept record, Alien Realms, is;

“… a melodic assault, blending thrash-driven verses, hyper-melodic choruses, and an epic finale, all immersed in grand, sweeping orchestrations. Bold and daring, humans leave Earth in search of intelligent extraterrestrial life. This track is divided into three distinct sections: the thrashy, aggressive verses; the ultra-melodic choruses; and the glorious, epic ending.”

Which is pretty spot on as far as I’m concerened, so I’m off for me tea and biscuits……

No? Oh well, worth a try.

The fact is that they are correct in their analysis of their own song – after all the wrote it, so, well DUH! – as When Humans Defy The Void is all those things and more.

It a glorious bastard of a song, with riffs so meaty that you’ll be dining on the fuckers until the end of time, a rhythm section that is quite happy to bludgeon you until are no more than a red stain on a pure white carpet, and a vocal performance that is one moment Satan himself barking orders at his minions in Hell, then Satan screaming in pain as he catches his Johnson in his zipper.

There are, indeed, three different sections to When Humans Defy The Void – which is very fucking impressive for a five minute song – but what they fail to mention is that these sections aren’t just littered with enough metal to make the Iron Giant fucking choke, but are also filled with beautiful piano and sweeping orchestras that will catch you unawares when they land, while having you praise the genius of Vortex in all their glory.

Is it heavy? Like 300 elephants packed into an elevator.

Is it thrashy? More than a Bay Area full of Metallica’s.

When Humans Defy The Void is, like its creators Vortex, unique, and unlike anything else you have ever heard. It is everything you think it would be, but cranked up to eleven and with more twists and turns than a Raymond Chandler novel, and if this is just a taster of what Alien Realms has to offer, then I can’t wait to be abducted on April 11th.

What? Oh, come on. It wasn’t that bad of a pun…
