Empire by Czarina

Few artists put the entirety of themselves into their works in the way Czarina does. The electronic artist, producer, multi-instrumentalist, filmmaker, visual artist, and creative director’s multifaceted talents are on full display in her latest work, Empire . This latest work is a hymnal for the digital age, which draws in listeners with a ritualistic trance. There is something for everyone here as influences from darkwave, ethereal, synthpop, and more traditional gothic music.

Opening track Rebirth begins our sonic journey with soaring vocals cast against a building atmospheric pressure that fully expands throughout the 8-track album. Ghost Machine is a personal favorite as it showcases what fans resonate with her works. The beat is out of a neon-colored nightmare with a repetitive refrain that is so easily quotable. The lyrics here also tie together the theme of the album, that being identity in the internet era and how we complete our metamorphosis into a being that exists beyond our perception.

Exoskeleto expands on this concept with something more danceable but never diverging from its epic energy. Empire’s vocals and synths show the influence of ethereal elements that were popularized in the 90s through bands like Dead Can Dance. Metatronica comes as a welcome change of pace, more dreamy and romantic. Twinkling synths complement the lighter tone Czarina takes in this song. Ending out the album is Beyond the Veil featuring China Blue, which steadily builds to an epic conclusion with orchestral strings. A perfect closer to let the listener process the grander vision she leaves us with.

In conclusion, this is a must-listen for any lover of genre, epic yet approachable. Please, go support her work on Bandcamp so we can all indulge in the next sonic journey she brings us. Until then, hails or something.
