The Atheist by Three Eyes of the Void

Hey everyone, Sean here at the Black Metal Archives, welcome back to the blog! Today, we’re diving into the depths of atmospheric black metal with a focus on Three Eyes of the Void and their latest release, The Atheist. This album dropped on October 27, 2023, and has been making waves in the black metal community as well as my Spotify playlist. Let’s explore what makes this record stand out.

Band Background

Three Eyes of the Void began in 2017 as a one-man project by Dmytro Kvashnin. Over time, it evolved into a full band, now featuring members like drummer Arkadiusz Niziolek and guitarist Marcin Urban. Their music delves into profound themes, particularly the “Death of God and Mortality,” inspired by Friedrich Nietzsche’s philosophies.

Album Overview

The Atheist is a 40-minute journey through atmospheric black metal, blending elements of progressive and post-metal to create a dark, melancholic, and introspective experience. The album comprises six tracks:

  1. “Behind the Stars”
  2. “Against the One”
  3. “Descent”
  4. “No More Light”
  5. “Delirium”
  6. “The Atheist”

Each track immerses the listener in themes of existential despair and the human condition.

The band’s sound is characterized by a fusion of atmospheric black metal with progressive and post-metal influences. The guitars deliver both tremolo-picked riffs and melodic passages, creating a dense and immersive atmosphere. The drumming by Arkadiusz Niziolek stands out, providing intricate patterns that enhance the overall mood without overpowering the melodies. Vocally, Dmytro’s delivery is both pained and contemplative, adding depth to the lyrical themes.

Track Highlights

  • Descent: This track encapsulates the band’s strengths, blending atmospheric elements with intense black metal riffs. Notably, it features a saxophone segment that adds a unique layer to the composition, enhancing its melancholic tone.
  • The Atheist: Serving as the album’s closer, this song combines riff-heavy melodies with a triumphant yet somber atmosphere, reflecting the album’s central themes of existential struggle and the search for meaning.

Three Eyes of the Void fits well within the atmospheric black metal genre, drawing comparisons to bands like Dissection and Blut Aus Nord. However, they carve out their own niche by focusing on themes of sorrow and existential despair, setting them apart from their peers.

The Atheist is a compelling addition to the atmospheric black metal scene, offering a profound exploration of existential themes through a blend of intense instrumentation and melancholic atmospheres. It’s a must-listen for fans seeking depth and introspection in their metal journey.
