I am in love. And the object of my affection is Doom Folk by Buzzard.
The blurb that accompanies Doom Folk reads;
What if Dylan listened to Sabbath and read Lovecraft? Buzzard combines the heavy riffs of Doom, ironic storytelling of Folk, and dark themes of Weird Fiction, Horror, SF, and social satire. Doom Folk is populated by misanthropic witches, stoner cockroaches, and dog-devouring aliens. Songs explore the evils of religion and the madness of mankind with pitch-black wit.
And even though that sounds as crazy as a bag of rabid badgers that have juat been poked with a pointy stick, it doesn’t fail to deliver on any of this glorious madness, because that’s what that press release sounds like, utter glorious madness.
In fact, Doom Folk is almost impossible to explain. It really is one of those records you have to go and listen to for yourself, but suffice to say this album hit me in a way that I haven’t felt since I first heard Tom Waits or 16 Horsepower, and that isn’t just lip service as Buzzard and Doom Folk reminds me of both of those acts.
It is experimental, it pushes boundaries, it’s bat shit crazy, and it is fucking amazing. It is a concept, not a concept album but an actual concept that sees Christopher Thomas Elliott explore the seedier sides of life, while a heavy dose of unspoken horror lurks in the background, threatening to swallow your soul.
It’s socially aware, it’s satanic as hell in places, it isn’t afraid to get it’s hands dirty in the back alley’s and gaming clubs, and it will probably punch your lights out if you spill it’s drink, but Doom Folk by Buzzard is not just a work of utter genius, it is something that I genuinely can’t explain to you through words.
You need to experience it yourself.
Head on over to the Buzzard Bandcamp page and check it out for yourself.
