Review: Pillars by Fides Inversa

Pillars by Fides Inversa is an extraordinary, gripping journey through the dark and arcane realms of black metal. Here, Fides Inversa have masterfully crafted a two track EP that combines unrelenting intensity with an almost ritualistic atmosphere. Both tracks locked within pulse with raw energy, yet there’s a profound sense of melody and structure that keeps you captivated from start to finish.

The musicianship is outstanding, as thunderous drums drive the relentless pace, while the guitars weave intricate, mesmerizing riffs. The vocals are feral, delivering both power and horrendous emotions, perfectly complementing the EP’s relentless assault. Pillars of the Adversary and Eden Below, create a cohesive and immersive experience, but both differ from each other in drastic ways.

While the opening track, Pillars of the Adversary, is a nuclear bomb to the face with mind bending guitar work, blistering pace, and vocals that’d give the Devil the shits if he bumped into them in a dark alley, it’s companion piece, Eden Below is something else entirely.

In their blurb for this EP, Fides Inversa state that Pillars;

celebrates the very essence of this dark entity…and heralds a new era of sonic terror.

And they aren’t fucking lying.

Eden Below is a waking nightmare. A soundscapre of unimaginable horrors that hunts you from the mists, unrelentlessly stalking you, waiting for the right moment to make the kill. It can smell your fear, it feeds off your terror and as it does it grows larger by the second. I am not lying when I say this is a monster of a track, and this monster wants to feed on your fucking soul.

Pillars is more than just a couple of songs that a band had kicking around and though ‘Sod it, these will do’, it is more than an EP; it’s an invocation, a sonic ritual that demands your full attention and you will give it, willingly. If you’re a fan of black metal that pushes boundaries while staying true to its roots, Pillars is a must-listen. Fides Inversa have truly outdone themselves with this release.
